Bruce M. Nelson Bruce M. Nelson is a CPA in the firm’s Denver office. He is not an attorney. Mr. Nelson received his B.A. degree in 1976 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his M.A. in 1992 from Colorado State University. Mr. Nelson joined Silverstein & Pomerantz LLP in March 2006. From 2003 through 2006, Mr. Nelson served as the Manager of Tax Policy for the State of Colorado Department of Revenue. Prior to 2003, Bruce was a Senior Manager in Denver’s Ernst & Young LLP office for several years where he supervised the state and local tax group. Mr. Nelson specializes in audit defense and controversy work and in advising clients in state and local tax planning in both sales tax and multistate corporate income tax. He has worked with clients in various industries including manufacturing, retail, computer technology and software, entertainment, mining, and services. While most of his focus has been on nexus, business/nonbusiness income, and apportionment issues, he also has extensive experience in federal partnership problems and merger and acquisitions. Mr. Nelson is a frequent speaker and teaches continuing education classes in state and local tax for the University of Denver’s Graduate Tax Program, the Colorado Society of CPAs, and the American Institute of CPAs. He is also on the adjunct faculty for Regis University, where he teaches courses in individual, partnership, and corporate taxation. Mr. Nelson has published more than thirty tax articles in many publications, including the Journal of Accountancy, Tax Executive, Controller Magazine, the Journal of Multistate Taxation, State Tax Notes, and Colorado Lawyer. A regular columnist for the Journal of State Taxation, he is also the co-author of the Sales and Use Tax Answer Book and co-editor of the Guidebook to Colorado Taxes, both published by Commerce Clearing House. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants, where he served on the State Tax Committee for four years. |
